Finding and working with a pediatric in-home care provider isn’t always easy. To help those starting this journey, we sat down with some of our MGA parents to ask what advice they would share with others who are in a situation similar to theirs. With their help, we’ve put together a list that will make it easier to handle anything this new experience throws your way!
1. Discuss expectations
From the first phone call, the team at your home care agency should be continuously working to make sure they provide the care that works best for you and your family’s needs. The more specific you are about your needs and expectations, the better. Your client service manager will do their best to make sure your needs are met and that you have the exact care you expect.
“It’s important to be honest with your entire home care team so everyone knows your expectations.” – Brenda Reyes, CNA and mother
2. Build trust
Home care clinicians are a special type of people who are passionate about what they do. Their main role is to provide the best care for your kiddo but beyond that, they’re a great resource when it comes to caring for children of all modalities. It’s important to ask thoughtful questions and remain in-the-know, but also let them do the best job possible.
“Listen to clinicians and take their advice to heart. Take their wisdom and run with it.” – Andrea Neff, CNA and mother
3. Ask for help
It’s important to remember to ask for help when you need it and to feel comfortable relying on others. We understand that a lot of times, it can feel like nobody knows what you’re going through, but that’s where pediatric home care can help. Tell your in-home care provider about any problems you may have, big or small, and they’ll do their best to help out.
“Be comfortable with leaning on support systems such as your in-home care provider. It’s important to find an organization or group of people that will work with you.” – Kendra Lubin, CNA, Graduate Nurse and mother
4. Build a network
Sometimes even the little things can seem overwhelming. Some days are harder than others but it’s important to have people in your corner you use as a resource. Match your family up with a provider that’s not just a home healthcare service, but a community of individuals who care deeply about the children on our services and their families.
“Never give up. We’ve found more than care at MGA, we’ve found a community, and that’s one of the best resources to have as a mother.” – Milissa Smith, CNA and mother
5. Take a break
Allowing someone new to enter your life and interact with your kiddo isn’t easy. One of a homecare provider’s main goals is to make caring for your little one easier on you. It’s important to establish a strong trusting relationship with your clinician so you feel comfortable taking a step back whenever possible.
“Don’t try to play the second nurse when you don’t need to. Focus on other things during that time or just take a nap!” – Emilia Garcia, mother
